Lukas Verstraete (°1992, Belgium) fills his graphic world with contemplative losers, grotesque women, doubtful knights and miserable maniacs. His work drips with sweaT, doubt, a good dose of naivety, smuttiness, stereotypes and a little bit of tenderness. Scratching his way towards the big question: what does it all mean?
His drawings have already popped up in HUMO, The New York Times, De Standaard, De Morgen, Bahamontes, Aline, Le Monde Diplomatique… And for anyone who wishes.
In 2013, he won the Best Script Award at the Fumetto comics festival. A year later, he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from LUCA School of Arts in Ghent. His first graphic novel ,Een Boek Waarmee Men Vrienden Maakt’ (Bries) was published in 2017 and translated in France (Editions MEme Pas Mal) and the United States (Fantagraphics).
Since 2018, Verstraete has been teaching at LUCA School of Arts at the Graphic Storytelling Studio In Brussels and at the Illustration Studio in Ghent.
